My weaknesses as a GM
An examination of what I wish I was better at even after decades of being a Games master.
My abiding vices as a GM are likely many but these are the
ones I am aware of and to which I will admit.
- Under
preparation, derives form one of my strengths if I am honest which is the
ability to improvise but I can over rely on it and then it can cause problems
- I can be a bit lazy and expect my players to drive the plot when they expect me to do all the heavy lifting in that regard
- I am not that hot on always playing the rules as written preferring a more "free kriegspiel approach" of working something out that reflects the situation using the current rules mechanics which annoys some players
- I
have no skill as a voice actor and all my NPC’s speak in the save voice
regardless of them having different verbal quirks, I have to describe
these in the way you might any other character trait because I can’t demonstrate
them.
- I
can draw and paint and am quite creative but I do wish I found drawing faces
easier than I do as it again helps the players see what’s going on.
- Campaign management I love complex multi threaded plots which make the game so thrones seem linear but I have some difficulty keeping stuff in order in my head, and perhaps because I am dyslexic find most campaign management software a total pain to use at best and at worst something which makes to problem worse.
- I tend to allow too much power creep in my games, and it always seems to happen it has in the Company of Fools game with Zildor the demigod 70+ level magic user and to a lesser extent with Violet and the whole Elsewhere story line
- I tend to start more things than I finish
